EDM # 151 - Ford Model T (free choice day)

I'm just old enough to have heard some details from my grandmother about what it was like to drive an old Model T Ford. Grandma loved her new 1970 Ford. She explained that when she would drive the old Ford model T that she would constantly have to jockey the steering wheel back and forth to keep the car driving straight on the road...

Here's some other information about what it was like to drive a Model T. Apparently, there where many unusual challenges that required some expertise!

Iowa Windmills

One of the fond memories of my childhood (during the 60s and 70s) were the trips my brother and I made with my grandmother to fun destinations around Northeast Iowa. Along the way, we saw many of the old windmills still in working order. Grandma would give us each a nickel every time we spotted a windmill rising above the corn fields in rural Iowa .

Jason riding bike

The highway going Broad River Road was under construction in Columbia, SC in May 2009. It was so rough and dangerous riding it I decided I needed to get off the road as quickly and ride the sidewalk. Suddenly, I heard screeching brakes and then Jason laying on the pavement behind me. I had no idea he was there. Fortunately, he was more embarrassed than hurt and there were no cars behind us. We were very lucky he was not hurt.

South Carolina Barn

Here's an old barn I saw during my bike ride across the state of South Carolina in May 2009. The 280 mile bike ride (starting from the mountains of North Carolina and ending at Isle of Palms near Charleston, SC) was part of a fundraiser for medical missions in Panama.

Sears Catalog Mansion

Twenty six years ago when I drew this home, I was told that this yellow brick mansion was built from a kit by Sears Roebuck and Company. It seems strange that such a grand place could be ordered from a Sears catalog! Indeed, it looks very similar to "The Magnolia" (Model No. 2089); ($5,140 to $5,972) http://www.searsarchives.com/homes/1915-1920.htm
